error bars explained

While going through my earlier mails I found this article published some time back (2008) in JCB, forwarded by one of our seniors. It will be very handy for some of us working with reproducible data to be published. Hope you will all like it.

Once upon a time in India...

The 'Bulls and Bears' once stared us...

An excellent narrative by Mr. Sanjaya Baru (editor of the business newspaper 'The Business Standard'). It is about an incident/phase our country has passed through while having rope walkes with our face at stake. All set in the baby 90s with the world stage set with India poised to a potential loss of face, and with the main protagonists being the Late PM Mr. PV Narasimha Rao and the current PM, their decision, irriversible and bold,  (now seemingly unbelievable and melodramatic) has changed our country may be for ever. Today as we sit at a new world order, and while looking back one ponders whether all that happened has changed our lives for good or for bad....i guess only destiny will have a finite answer. But one thing is fore sure, even tacit failure of long held policies can have wide ramifications....

Scicomm-the science and communication workshop of DBT-Wellcome trust alliance

A Semaphore, one of the oldest modern telecommunication methods.

The DBT-Wellcome trust India Alliance (IA) is offering an excellent workshop on science and communication. The previous one was a blockbuster hit. It is a very good programme, offering the young scientists (early post Docs and Ph. D students in their final year of Ph. D) excellent platform to learn and hone the skills to get an excellent career in science. Dont miss it. The dates for next conference are on 24, 25 & 26 August. The run up to the workshop is competitive and time consuming (but really worth investing) with write ups, and presentations. Since the last one (the programme runs quarterly) was successful this time one might expect a bit more competition. But dont miss it. You can find more details here

Education: The PhD factory - interesting news article from Nature.

Are we in an Industry???

The world is producing more PhDs than ever before. Is it time to stop?

One of our colleague forwarded this interesting article from Nature news. Many of our friends with same feathers might feel most of the views are absolutely true. And yes, our very own India is also in the news. Yes, our science is also being discussed!!! (unforutnately some of us are the subjects!)

Pls read the article, it i free from the site.

UGC faculty recharge programme

             Opportunity: The Mars Rover

This is a unique and a novel effort on behalf of UGC to revitalize the university system in India. Program has been launched with a goal to attract highly motivated individuals with a passion for teaching and research to join the university system in field of basic sciences to rejuvenate the research and teaching programs.

The uniqueness and novelty of the effort stem from the fact that it will be an attempt (first of its kind-in my limited knowledge) where the appointment are being made at positions of Assistant/Associate and full Professor positions and the extension of tenure is suggested to be purely based on peer evaluation after 5yrs.

For expanded description of the Programme, Positions and Application
Procedure, please visit website:
